What I Sent To Henrietta Sweeting

It seems that my friend, Henrietta, has been unable to post a photo of the items I mailed to her in her kit. So, I'm posting a photo I took of the kit before I sent it.

HSKS5_Kit

I sent a Gator scarf I knit, a Japanese Feathers hat I knit, a custom made Hufflepuff color row counter bracelet, a gold and white row counter pendant, a blue and clear Swarovski beaded row counter to clip to a bag or project, Hufflepuff colors stitch markers, a nest of dragon eggs I knit, a mini Hufflepuff Quidditch sock, Hufflepuff House Crest iron-on badges, Socks That Rock in Tiger Eye (as she requested), Knit Picks metal dpns size 2.25mm, and the Tangled Faeries sock pattern.

I also sent some cool Hogwarts and Quidditch stickers in a separate mailing. I drew a cute owl on the envelope that I wish I'd taken a photo of.

I plan to send a little surprise or two yet before the term ends.

It's Here! It's Here!

I received a magically amazing kit from Lily of Flitwick in Slytherin House last week. Unfortunately, my muggle camera wasn't working very well in this heightened magical environment. I figured out a lovely charm, though, that enabled me to (finally!) upload the pics to the computer.

Without further ado, I present Lily's Kit:

Lily of Flitwick's Kit - Top Layer
This is what I saw upon pulling back the Gryffindor colored tissue...

Lily of Flitwick's Kit - Wrapped Up
...and this is what was under the first layer...

LFlitwick4Lily of Flitwick's Kit - Last Layer
...and this was the last layer with the gorgeous handmade journal cover!

Lily of Flitwick's Kit - Patterns
These are the patterns that she sent - all FOUR of them!!!

Since there's just too much to see, here's a listing of the contents:
1. Aforementioned gorgeous handmade journal cover with large lined journal
2. Divination kit including scrying ball and stickers
3. A tin of Ghirardelli chocolates for use when spells go wrong to recover from backlash
4. Exclusive Gryffindor colorway yarn from her lys
5. Lovely Harry Potter fold-out bookmarks
6. A full skein of Twisted Fiber Art yarn in the Tulips colorway!
7. ALL of the yarn necessary to complete the Phoenix Rising bag pattern
8. The Phoenix Rising bag pattern
9. Nagini socks pattern
10. Bellatrix socks pattern
11. Fawkes socks pattern
12. US size 8 circ needle
13. "Clickie" row counter
14. Jeweled Gryffindor stitch markers

I know I must be forgetting an item or so because this kit was super packed. Did you notice that she included EVERYTHING needed to make the Phoenix Rising bag? I did!

Lily, thank you from the bottom of my heart for this incredible package. Your poor owl was nearly catatonic for a few days, but recovered well and is flying back to you now.

Gryffindor Quiz #4

Hmmm ... this one's gonna be tough. I'm not really good at cryptograms. Here it is:

"E FM YJA DBFU," QFET KFXXG EY F VJD RJESB, WHXG YJD PHMPEYN AKXJHNK KEM QJ AKFA KB AKJHNKA KB MENKA FAAFSU QYFPB EY F MJMBYA. "AKBY PXJRB EA! MFQABX GJHXQBVW!" QPFA QYFPB.

I think this is the answer, but it looks like the "U" in LOUD was not included for some reason.

"I AM NOT WEAK," SAID HARRY IN A LO[U]D VOICE, FURY NOW PUMPING THROUGH HIM SO THAT HE THOUGHT HE MIGHT ATTACK SNAPE IN A MOMENT. "THEN PROVE IT! MASTER YOURSELF!" SPAT SNAPE.

Walking On Air

Well, not literally walking on air. I've finally gotten over the doldrums. A few walks with a hot Ravenclaw guy with god-like good looks will do that.

His name is Kevin Walker, and he's supercalihot! He's from the States too, and his parents were both muggles. He was feeling just like I was a few weeks ago.

I ran into him by the lake shore one evening just after dinner. I'd been walking to the bench in the little park-like area on the eastern side of the lake - perfect for watching sunsets - and I saw that my seat was already taken.

At first I was irritated that I wouldn't be able to sit alone with my thoughts as the sun set, but then I was curious. Who is this lovely boi sitting in my spot?

So we started talking. Apparently we were both suffering from magic overload and homesickness. He's only twelve, but he looks older. He's from Jamestown, VA. He has light brown hair, gorgeous velvety chocolate-brown eyes with the thickest, blackest lashes I've ever seen on a guy. I was actually jealous! He has a bit of a tan, thin and strong (he's a swimmer), elegant hands with perfectly oval nails at the end of his long fingers (perfect for piano playing - no fair!). His laugh is hearty and warm, and his eyes sparkle when he's happy.

That first evening, though, I didn't see the sparkle or hear the laughter. We didn't really speak a whole lot at all. We introduced ourselves, he made room on the bench, and I sat down. The conversation started very slowly. I asked him why he was staring so forlornly at the water. He answered that everything was too different here, just too much in every way, you know. I said I felt the same and that was why I came to the lake. I just needed to get away from it all and think.

That's how our relationship began. I've seen Kevin almost everyday. He's in two of my classes, and I have no clue how he escaped my notice before! We do our homework together, and our friends have all become friends, so we're like this great big group now. Too cool!

It's soooo hard though when he has to go to swim lessons and I go to Quidditch practice without him. He's not on his House's Quidditch team. I hate it whenever we have to say goodbye. I think I might be falling in love.

I mentioned him to my mom in a letter, and she wrote back that I should be careful not to get my feelings hurt. She said something really stupid about "puppy love," and I had to bite down really hard to keep from screaming. What the heck is "puppy love" supposed to be anyway? Isn't love love? She just doesn't get it.

I'm meeting Kevin in twenty minutes at our bench by the lake. I want to look perfect, so I'll have to write more later.

Gryffindor Quiz #3

[NB: All answers written by Laeita Khandylle, not her muggle alter ego]

1. Who is your favorite member of the Order of the Phoenix?
Mr. and Mrs. Weasley, of course. They're so kind, courageous, and generous.

2. Favorite person at Hogwarts?
My dear Hufflepuff friend, Henrietta Sweeting

3. Favorite spell or charm to use?
"Accio _____" - just because it's so very useful and convenient

4. Best and worst classes at Hogwarts?
My very favorite class is Charms, I've grown to hate my History of Magic class - it's soooo boring!

5. Favorite flower?
I'm not sure if you'd consider it a flower or an herb, but I adore lavender

6. What is your beverage of choice? Coffee, tea, latte, soda/pop?
I've grown to love many teas since arriving here at Hogwarts, and since discovering that soda pop has a very different meaning here than home, I'm not really a fan.

7. Favorite muggle music? I love just about any music that is well-performed and intelligently composed.

8. How many family members do you have?
Mom, Dad, Boston Terrier, (Does Dewey my mouse familiar count?)

9. What do you do on your summer vacation? What is your Favorite vacation ever taken?
We usually take some sort of week-long trip, usually camping. The rest of my summer I just hang out with my friends.

10. What is your favorite subject at Hogwarts? Why?
As I said before, I love my Charms class. I guess I like it the most because that's what I have the strongest talent for, and I'm pulling an A+ average right now.

11. How many pairs of shoes (footwear) do you have? Which are your favorite pair? Let's see ... I have my uniform shoes, bedtime slippers, Quidditch footwear, water and snow repellant boots, formal slippers, muggle sneakers and Crocs. Sad to say, but the sneakers are my favorite because they're the most comfortable and worn in.

12. How many projects do you have OTN (on the needles)?
Belinda and I have been working long and hard on items for SPEW. Since we have a decent pile of hats knit up, I have some different items OTN now. I'm working on a lacy scarf, socks, a stole, and more.

13. What is the oldest project you're working on and when did you cast it on?
The very oldest still OTN is a large afghan that I co a few years ago.

14. Favorite food(s)?
OOoh, since being at Hogwarts I've developed a real taste for Chocolate Frogs, Bloodpops, Morsagna (basically a delicious lasagna that keeps filling up your plate until you're super full), Minticles (mint-flavored icicles you harvest from the roof of the deep freeze), Treacle Tarts, and Blabbering Bisque (the best way to get all the juicy gossip!)

Beyond The Mirror

I'm not doing so well on the Quidditch team. Perhaps I'm not cut out for this type of sport. I keep getting hit in the face and torso with balls even though I do my best to bat them away. Madam Hooch says that it will come with time, especially since this is my first time flying, having been raised as a muggle.

I also lost my duel. The best part is receiving a beautiful pair of socks, but the worst is being unable to move on to the next phase. I was able to complete a lovely hat for SPEW, though. The pattern wasn't very hard, so I've already started a second hat.

I think I've been suffering more than simple homesickness. I feel like Alice behind the looking glass. There's so much magic all around me. It's wonderful and terrifying, and just too too much for me right now.

I miss normal. I want to be able to eat candy without having to worry about it jumping away from me or tasting like grass. I want to sweep with the broom, not ride it. I want to be able to go to the bathroom without having to worry about being interrupted by a ghost.

I miss my friends. I want to go to the mall, ride my bike, watch movies in a theater, drink Slushies, walk the dog, and even go to school like a regular kid.

The thing is, I don't want to go back to my previous life either. I like going to see the stars at midnight. It's so cool to change a rat to a chalice and back again. I love being able to eat as much of my favorite foods as I want without having to make it myself. I adore watching all the magical creatures that Hagrid cares for.

I'm so betwixt and between these worlds. Most of the kids here were raised with at least one magical parent, most by two and their extended magical families. For the most part they're friendly, smart, clever, and just wonderful people. I just feel like we don't have a lot of common ground. Things that I take for granted are wondered and puzzled over by them.

Here's an example: writing with ballpoints on looseleaf? Yeah, they're stumped and amazed by that. Their reactions to simple things like that make me feel so sad and homesick.

Most of all, I wish my parents were the way they were before. It would have been better if all of my family really were muggles instead of magic folk. It's like the very foundations of my life have been ripped away and I'm not sure what I can rely on or where I fit in.

I know that I'm "magic folk" now, I guess I always have been, but I feel like a misplaced muggle. Each time I do magic I'm surprised. The funny thing is that I'm good at it. I'm getting top marks in my Transfiguration and Charms classes, and doing quite well in the others too.

The only thing I can compare what I feel when I perform magic successfully to is if I had suddenly belched quite loudly in a silent class full of people. That sense of startled eruption followed by a sinking feeling of embarrassment. I feel like that when I've cast a spell perfectly! How weird is that? You'd think I'd only feel like that if I'd screwed it up.

Here's more odd for you. The person I've been confiding in the most is the House Elf, Belinda. She's so much wiser than everyone knows. She listens to me for the longest time while she works. We'll sit and knit together for hours. Here I am, talking to a non-human creature about how overwhelmed, overstimulated, and homesick I am. I'm not sure why or how she understands, but I get the distinct feeling that she knows exactlyhow I feel.

I think I'm going to get my knitting together and go talk with Belinda right now.

Running To Catch Up

Time is just flying by. I'd best be careful - around here you might just see a winged hourglass flutter by the window if I say that!

I've joined the Dueling Club. Traditionally, it is a duel between wizards and/or witches using our wands. In this particular club, though, our wands are knitting needles and our spells are patterns. It has been stated that there are to be no spells that allow for automatic knitting, speed enhanced knitting, accuracy enhanced knitting, or any other spell that affect the knitting process itself.

We are allowed to use any spells that enhance the yarn used. We can have color-changing yarns, content-changing yarns, strength and durability enhanced yarns, etc.

I'm in the sock knitting bracket. There's a hat knitting bracket, but sock knitting is what I'm most familiar with, so I figured I'd go with that.

I've made good friends with Henrietta Sweeting, a second year in Hufflepuff House. We don't see each other very often due to the massive workload and being in different Houses. It's a shame, really. I need to work harder at keeping in touch. Maybe we could plan to meet for a chat in the Great Hall over the weekend.

I used to hate gym class in school, but now I love it. We're learning how to fly on broomsticks! I've even gone so far as to join the Quidditch team for Gryffindor House. Yet again, mom was right. I'm glad I have the regulation Quidditch uniform. Sure enough, the colors and badges have all changed to Gryffindor colors. We're still just practicing, but the first match against the other Houses is coming soon!

Dewey is the coolest mouse ever! He's very friendly; he even eats out of my hand. I've also discovered that he knows English. He can't speak, but I borrowed a Ouija board from a fellow student to help him out. He walks up to the letters he wants, puts his paw on it, and looks up to be sure I've paid attention. I sure do have to pay attention. Dewey is fast!

There are these really cool folks called House Elves here. They're short, large-eyed, large-eared, child-looking creatures. They're kind for the most part, but as with everything, there are a few sour grapes among them. I've heard that they're practically slaves in lots of places, but they're all free elves here at Hogwarts. It's funny, the jobs have remained the same and all, but they're downright cheerful about doing them. I guess this hasn't always been the case.

I've befriended a couple of the house elves. The one assigned especially to our dorm, Belinda, is the sweetest little lady I ever have run across. She's always bringing us little goodies from the kitchen after hours. Usually it's just a cookie or two, but sometimes she outdoes herself with an entire meal's worth of midnight snacks. I do mean midnight! She sneaks warily in, her arms laden with a tray of food and drink, and sets it silently down on the central table. She stands and beams at us while we eat, occasionally giggling softly and murmuring comments about keeping her "dear ones" fed and happy. We all just love her like crazy. Belinda is the BEST!

Preparing For Hogwarts

Where was I? Oh yes. We had arrived at Diagon Alley. I felt so strange there. So much was different, but so much was the same too. It was sort of like seeing double.

While mom went to exchange some money at Gringott's Wizarding Bank, dad took me to Flourish and Blott's to select the books I would need. My classes are Astronomy, Charms, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Herbology, History of Magic, Potions, and Transfiguration. Mom came with our Galleons, Sickles, and Knuts while we were still waiting in line to pay.

Once we had my books, mom put them all in her purse. I should have known she'd pull a Mary Poppins or something. Our next stop was Ollivander's Wands for, what else, my magic wand. I'm not sure how, but Mr. Ollivander knew the right wand for me immediately. It's made of Holly and has a Dragon Heartstring core.

We stopped at Madam Malkin's Robes For All Occasions to pick up my student robes. I hate the idea of uniforms, but once I tried it on, I realized that the cut suited me very well. We got three each of standard skirts, blouses, ties, vests, socks, and shoes. Mom bought a Quidditch uniform for me "just in case you want to play on a team." Dad said each item was "blank" until I was sorted into a House. At that time, the uniform would adjust to the proper House colors and badges.

We bought the rest of the required items without and problems. Dad suggested I buy a field mouse for a familiar. I bought a very sweet brown and grey mouse named Dewey.

After a lovely lunch that was thankfully free of any magic, my parents took me to the train station. They held my hands and took me through the wall to the Hogwarts Express platform.

Saying goodbye was awful. Even though my parents are a pain, I miss them like crazy. I thought I was going to throw up when the train started to move and they appeared smaller and smaller as we pulled away from the station.

We didn't reach Hogwarts until nighttime. A giant with a brown shaggy beard led us to a dark lake where little boats were waiting for us. (I found out later that the giant's name is Hagrid.) The boats steered themselves to the far shore of the lake where a very imposing Gothic structure awaited us. Once inside, we were led to a Great Hall that was already filled with other students.

Our Headmistress, Ms. Wartbobble, greeted us warmly and told us to come to the front of the room to be sorted. I'm really glad mom and dad told me all about this or I would've been completely lost. This awesome old brown hat was placed on each student's head and it called out what House we were to be in.

Mom and dad had hoped I'd be placed in Ravenclaw because of my IQ and academic interests. The hat had other ideas. It said that I had a strong spirit and brave heart that belonged in Gryffindor. So I'm in Gryffindor House. ROAR, ROAR, GRYFFINDOR!

We ate a lovely dinner and then were led to our dormitories. We were introduced to our prefect and sent to bed. I had no argument there - I was exhausted! They said that we'd be assigned our term-long dorm mates later in the week. I thought I'd have a tough time getting to sleep in such a strange and new place, but I think I fell asleep before my head hit the pillow.

A Whole LOT Going On

Wow. Okay, much drama has ensued since the owl dropped the letter off here. Mom and Dad are fine now. I guess Dad's family has magic people in it too. After a few phone calls, local and long-distance, he's been stunned to find out just how many! Mom said that this was part of why she's been saying they need to communicate more often and openly.

Mom got a bunch of books from Great-Great-Aunt Dalleigha for me to check out before going to England. I'm not sure how they arrived so quickly, but they were at my place at breakfast the morning after the letter came. I thought they'd be full of really cool arcane spells and such, but it turns out that magical studies might be a lot more like regular school than I thought. Very disappointing.

It seems that things for First Years are pretty rudimentary. I'm glad that I'm an "A" student in the States 'cos I actually know a bunch of things in these books anyway! I think one of the neatest things for me wasn't so much the books, but learning that I'm going to go *shopping* for all sorts of wicked (ha, ha, not really) things at a place Mom calls "Diagon Alley."

I apparently needed robes (dress and uniform), pointy hat, cauldron, wand, perhaps an animal familiar, and a bunch more. I asked if our dog could come with me and be my familiar. My parents just whipped their heads around in unison and gave me "a look." The scary thing was that the dog whipped her head around at the same moment, and I swear she gave me "the look" too. Creepy. Anyway, Dad said I couldn't because First Years could only have certain animals - the other choices came later.

I was packing my bags to get ready to go when my mom came in my room and wanted to know why I was packing half the house. "You're really not going to need many of your clothes. We're going to have to buy you new ones in Diagon Alley. Why don't you just pack some things that will help you keep home close to you while you're away." So I'm taking some photos in frames and a scrapbook. I'm bringing my favorite pillow and blanket, my favorite bath towel and robe, my GIR plushie, my Jhonny The Homicidal Maniac nightshirt, some soap, clothing detergent, and fabric softener (to smell like home), my booklight, and other toiletries. It seems so weird that everything fits into one small trunk. Mom and dad said that my trunk would be much larger after the shopping spree.

Yeah. They said that the trunk would be larger. I found out later that they hadn't misspoken. Hmmm.

When I had said goodbye to my friends, packed all my things, and had my quiet alone time to say goodbye to my home, I brought my trunk into the living room. My parents were already there and smiling. Dad said to just leave the trunk for now, that they'd make sure it came with us. They each took one of my hands, mom said we were going to *jump into the fireplace* on the count of three, and we ended up coming out of another fireplace somewhere else! I swear I'm not making this up! It was the strangest moment of my life. Well, the strangest up until then, anyway.

Ack! The Prefect is going around the rooms telling us it's time for lights out. I'll write more tomorrow.

The Heck, You Say!

I'm heading to Hogwarts. An owl dropped off a letter for me a bit ago. Apparently this is a school for future witches and wizards to be educated. Beyond odd.

Once the letter arrived, mom and dad started talking to each other about me, magic, school, and everything, just like I wasn't even there! Dad was totally whigging out because mom was saying something about how "witch and wizard blood shows up every now and then in our family, and how was I supposed to know she had it before now," and other stuff like that.

I have wondered why my parents would let my weird old Great-Great-Aunt Dalleigha give me such a stupid name. Laeita Khandylle Haxloeffyn-Bharnoell. Yeah. Say that out loud. Kind of sounds like "light a candle, hex lovin barn owl," doesn't it? I guess that mom asked her to name me when I was born. The last name? Uh huh. Dad wasn't shy about being loud tonight when he told me that he'd changed his last name to mom's when they were married. How about that?!

It's hard to believe that I'm going to be a witch. Well, I already am one, according to mom. I'm just going to learn how to do it well at Hogwarts. I've always done and seen weird things, but I never thought I really was magical or anything. I think I convinced myself that most of it was all my imagination anyway. Now she says it's all real.

Dad is outside smoking! He hasn't smoked since I was six-years-old. He did go out earlier to get our dinner. I guess he bought cigarettes then. I didn't think he'd get so upset about this. I'm the one who's going away.

The school is over in England somewhere. Could an owl really fly from England to us here in New York, USA? I don't want to leave here now. All my friends are here. My whole life is here! Omigod, I'm going to panic now.

I keep trying to hear what mom and dad are talking about. He's back from his ciggie now. He was loud enough earlier, but now they're speaking quietly. I can hear some of it. It seems that he's more upset that mom didn't share her entire heritage with him than that I'm going to be going to school across the ocean. Hell-ooo! I'm the one who's going through the major life disruption here. How come no one wants to talk to me or see how I'm doing. I'm just their kid. Geez!

Now he's telling mom that there have always been "odd" people in his family too. Mom started to tell him that odd isn't the same as magic, but he cut her off and started to say something but I couldn't hear. Now no one's talking.

I'll report back later...
